How to find a screenshot on your iPhone, even when it seems gone
iPhone screenshots are saved in the Photos app. Open Albums, scroll to Media Types and tap Screenshots, where they are listed by date with the newest at the bottom. You can also search Photos for words inside the image, or check Files and Recently Deleted if you chose a different save option.

Where are screenshots saved on iPhone?
By default, in the Photos app. Open Photos, tap Albums at the bottom, scroll down to Media Types and tap Screenshots. Every screenshot you saved is there, sorted by the date you took it, with the newest at the bottom. You can also find them in the main Recents album, mixed with your photos.
If you took a screenshot and chose Save to Files when you tapped Done, the image is in the Files app, in the folder you picked. If you chose Delete Screenshot, it was never saved.
How do I search for a screenshot by what is in it?
Photos search can read text in images. Tap the search icon, type a word you remember from the screenshot, such as a restaurant name, and look at the results. This works with clean printed text and depends on your iOS version. Try one distinctive word rather than a sentence.
Other ways to narrow the search:
Searching by recognized text is the fastest option for any screenshot that carries words, and most do.
- Search by date or month, for example "September" or "2026".
- Search by an app name or a place if you remember it.
- Filter the Screenshots album and then use the search box inside it, or sort through only the last week.
- Use the Spotlight search on your home screen and look under Photos results.
What if the screenshot seems to be missing?
Check these places in order.
If none of these works, the screenshot may never have been saved. Pressing the buttons and tapping the thumbnail away can discard it.
- Recents. Scroll to the bottom of the main library and look at the last items.
- Recently Deleted. Open Albums, then Recently Deleted. Items stay for up to 30 days.
- Hidden album. If you hid it, open Albums, Utilities, Hidden. On newer iOS versions it is locked.
- Files. Look in Recents and in On My iPhone for an image you saved there.
- Other devices. With iCloud Photos on, a screenshot taken on an iPad appears on your iPhone after sync. Wait for the upload to finish.
- Messages and Mail. If you sent the screenshot to someone, it may be in that conversation. Tap the contact name and open the photos section.
Why do screenshots not appear right away?
The usual cause is iCloud sync. When iCloud Photos is on, new items upload in the background, and a large library can take a while, particularly on cellular data or with Low Power Mode on. Plug in the phone and connect to Wi-Fi, and open the Photos app so it can finish. Check Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos to confirm the setting.
How do I keep screenshots findable?
The best habit is to give a screenshot context at once. Two ways:
Searchable captions are underused. A caption such as "ramen place Kreuzberg" makes the image easy to find months later.
- Mark up and name it. After taking the screenshot, tap the thumbnail, draw or add text with Markup, and save. Or add a caption in Photos: swipe up on a photo and tap Add a Caption. Captions are searchable.
- Add to an album. Create an album called Keep and add the screenshots you want to use. Long-press a photo and choose Add to Album.
Is there a better system than an album?
An album stores the image, but not the plan. If you saved a menu, an album will not remind you to go. For screenshots you intend to act on, moving the information into a list is more useful than finding the picture. Our guide to organizing screenshots describes a method, and Live Text helps you copy the words out of the image.
KEEP, an iPhone app in development, includes a search that works from a rough memory. Items you added, including screenshots you picked, are stored with the text read from them. In the Keeps tab, you type something like "restaurant with the red pasta", and each result shows a "Found because" line naming the match. Read more on the search by memory page. Search needs a connection because the app asks the server to run each query, and it only covers what you put into KEEP.
What about screenshots from other apps?
Some apps, including video and social apps, block screenshots of certain content, such as protected video. In that case the screenshot may come out black or not save. Screen recording has the same limit. If you rely on such content, save the link or note down the details.
A quick routine
Do this on the same day you take the screenshot:
Done daily, this takes less than a minute and means you rarely need to search at all.
- Copy any text you need.
- Add a caption or move the information to your list.
- Delete the image if the information now lives elsewhere.
Can I find screenshots on a Mac or iPad?
Yes, if iCloud Photos is on for the same Apple ID. The Photos app on a Mac and an iPad has the same Screenshots album under Media Types. On a Mac, you can also use Spotlight to search photos by text. If you took the screenshot on another device, give it time to sync before you decide it is missing.
How can I tell a screenshot from a photo?
Screenshots have a few clues. They match the screen size of the phone that took them, they are listed in the Screenshots album, and the info panel shows no camera details. If you want to separate them from other images, rely on the album, since iOS files them there as soon as they are saved. A screenshot saved as a file from another app may not be filed automatically, so check Recents as well.
Frequently asked questions
Where do screenshots go on iPhone?
To the Photos app, in the Screenshots album under Media Types, and in Recents. If you chose Save to Files, they go to the Files app.
How do I find an old screenshot quickly?
Search in Photos for a word that appears in the image. If that fails, filter by date in the Screenshots album.
Why can't I find my screenshot?
It may be in Recently Deleted, saved to Files, not yet synced from iCloud, or never saved because you tapped Delete Screenshot.
Can I see when a screenshot was taken?
Yes. Open it in Photos, swipe up or tap the info button to see the date and time.
Do screenshots count against iCloud storage?
Yes. They are photos, so they use your iCloud Photos storage when that is on.
